On Friday, October 11th, during Coming-Out Day, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam will open the exhibition Queer Horizons, with a focus on youth in the Stadsgalerij. Through art and personal stories, ten young people from Schiedam and Rotterdam, together with artist Leon Stoffelen, reflect on both Schiedam’s LGBTQIA+ history and their own identities. The exhibition also highlights the life of Jillis Bruggeman, a central figure in Schiedam's LGBTQIA+ history. His story will also be added to Panorama Schiedam, the permanent exhibition on the city's history.
Queer Horizons presents both the exploration of Jillis Bruggeman’s identity and that of today’s youth, connecting the past with the present in a pastel-colored, safe space. Through a 12-meter-long collage and video installation, these young people share their visions of being queer today and in the future.
Permanent Addition to Panorama Schiedam:
Jillis Bruggeman’s story will have a permanent place in Panorama Schiedam, honoring his legacy and continuing the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights.
The exhibition will launch on Coming-Out Day and coincides with the awarding of the Jillis Bruggeman Penning to individuals or organizations advocating for gender diversity.

Op vrijdag 11 oktober, tijdens Coming-Outdag, opent in het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam de tentoonstelling Queer Horizons, waarin jongeren centraal staan in de Stadsgalerij. Tien jongeren uit Schiedam en Rotterdam reflecteren samen met kunstenaar Leon Stoffelen op zowel het LHBTIQA+ verleden van Schiedam als op hun eigen identiteit en toekomst. De tentoonstelling belicht ook het leven van Jillis Bruggeman, een belangrijke figuur uit de LHBTIQA+ geschiedenis van Schiedam. Zijn verhaal krijgt een vaste plek in Panorama Schiedam, de vaste tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van de stad.
Queer Horizons verkent de zoektocht naar zowel de identiteit van Jillis Bruggeman als die van de jongeren van nu, en verbindt daarmee het verleden met het heden. In een 12 meter lange collage en video-installatie delen de jongeren hun visies op queer zijn in de toekomst.
Vaste Plek in Panorama Schiedam:
Het verhaal van Jillis Bruggeman krijgt een permanente plek in Panorama Schiedam, waarmee het museum zijn verhaal eert en bijdraagt aan de strijd voor gelijke rechten van LHBTIQA+-ers.
De tentoonstelling opent speciaal op Coming-Outdag, en diezelfde avond vindt de uitreiking van de Jillis Bruggeman Penning plaats in de Grote Kerk in Schiedam.
