Intersex
While we are becoming more accustomed to people who don’t fit into boxes, a large group of Dutch people still live with a secret. They are intersex: born with a body that is different from what we consider as male or female. They have characteristics of both. Sometimes it becomes evident at birth that a child is intersex, as their physical characteristics may not clearly indicate whether they are a boy or a girl. More often, there may be no visible external signs. The variation can be internal and can become apparent later on. For example, when a teenage girl does not start with her period.
Secret
Intersex refers to the I in LGBTQIA+. 1 in 90 people is born with an intersex variation, also known as a Difference of Sex Development (DSD). Until recently, the official policy regarding intersex has been to keep it a secret and make the body more male or female through medical procedures. Slowly but surely, there becomes more openness about intersex in society. The medical practice is changing too, although recent research shows that genital surgery is still being performed on children under the age of 12 in the Netherlands, even if it is not medically necessary and the children cannot have a say in the decision.
Taboo on biological sex diversity
Biological sex diversity maintains a taboo in our society. This portrait series aims to change that. 21 intersex people come forward with their experiences: what is it like to live in a world that is divided into men and women while you have a body that does not fit into either of those boxes? If this exhibition proves anything, it is that everyone experiences it differently. Yet, there are also parallels among those portrayed. Living with a secret, for example, weighs heavily. Just like the medical procedures people could not have a say in. Almost every person relates to the biology lessons in school, intersex is – to this day! – being denied. Another common denominator is the relief when the secret has been revealed and the responses are generally positive.
Inclusive society
There is one thing that all those portrayed agree upon: there needs to be more knowledge and societal awareness about intersex and the existence of biological sex diversity. Biological sex is a spectrum with infinitely many variations, much more than just male and female. For intersex people, it is only truly safe to come out when society knows they exist and that it is perfectly natural and normal to be intersex.
On tour
Starting from May 2023 onwards, this multimedia exhibition will travel to various municipalities in the Netherlands. In addition to the exhibition, we will organize an impact program in collaboration with local partners, such as guided tours, panel discussions, and other knowledge-sharing events where social partners, municipalities, governments, healthcare and educational institutions, and advocacy organizations can learn and share information with the public about intersex. The project also includes a magazine, podcast, and a short documentary.

De buitententoonstelling ‘Intersekse- 1 op de 90’ werd op 17 mei door Burgemeester Anja Schouten op het Stationsplein in Alkmaar geopend. Alkmaar is de eerste plek waar deze reizende tentoonstelling te zien is.
De tentoonstelling toont beelden en vertelt het verhaal van 21 intersekse personen tussen de 2,5 jaar en 81 jaar oud. Zij zijn bereid met hun onderbelichte verhaal naar buiten te treden. Journalist Lara Aerts interviewde de geportretteerden, fotograaf Ernst Coppejans maakte de prachtige beelden en stichting Open mind produceerde de tentoonstelling en het magazine.
Intersekse staat voor de I uit LHBTQIA+. Een grote groep Nederlanders is geboren met een lichaam dat anders is dan we gewend zijn bij man of vrouw. Deze mensen hebben kenmerken van beiden. Bij deze groep mensen leeft de wens om het maatschappelijk bewustzijn over intersekse en het bestaan van seksediversiteit te vergroten.
Geheim
Terwijl we steeds meer gewend raken aan mensen die niet in standaard hokjes passen, leeft een grote groep Nederlanders nog altijd met een geheim. Ze zijn geboren met een lichaam dat anders is dan we gewend zijn bij man of vrouw. Soms is dat meteen bij de geboorte te zien, het is dan niet duidelijk of er een jongen of meisje geboren is. Veel vaker zie je aan de buitenkant niks. Dan zit de variatie van binnen en komt het pas later aan het licht.
Medisch ingrijpen
Het officiële beleid rondom intersekse was jarenlang: geheim houden en eventueel chirurgisch en/of hormonaal corrigeren. Inmiddels komt er heel langzaam meer openheid en de medische praktijk verandert mee. Maar het idee dat het beter is om op te groeien als jongen óf als meisje en dat medisch ingrijpen soms wenselijk kan zijn, is nog altijd gangbaar.
Opluchting
Hoe is het om te leven in een wereld die verdeeld is in mannen en vrouwen terwijl jij fysieke kenmerken hebt van beide? Kevin van 23 voelt zich 100% man, terwijl Samantha (39) zowel het mannelijke als vrouwelijke in zichzelf omarmt. En waar Ket (81) intersekse ervaart als een aandoening, noemt Leonne (61) het een geslachtsvariatie. Als de expositie íets aantoont, dan is het dat iedereen het verschillend ervaart. Toch zijn er ook parallellen tussen de geportretteerden. De geheimhouding drukt zwaar. Net als de medische ingrepen waar mensen niet over konden meebeslissen. Een gemene deler is ook de opluchting als het geheim eenmaal is doorbroken en de omgeving onverwachts positief reageert! Leigh (35): ‘Het maakte blijkbaar niemand iets uit wat voor hormonen of chromosomen ik heb.’
Verandering nodig
Over één ding zijn alle geportretteerden het eens: er moet meer bekendheid en maatschappelijk bewustzijn komen over intersekse en over het bestaan van seksediversiteit. Biologisch geslacht is namelijk een spectrum met oneindig veel variaties, veel meer dan alleen man en vrouw. Het is voor intersekse personen pas écht veilig om ermee naar buiten te komen als de maatschappij weet dat jij bestaat. En dat het volstrekt natuurlijk en normaal is om intersekse te zijn. Berthine (41): ‘Het is geen foutje van de natuur, maar een force of nature.’
1 op de 90 op reis
Daarom reist de buitententoonstelling Intersekse, 1 op de 90 iedere drie weken naar een andere gemeente in Nederland.
